Jesus Treated Epilepsy Ketogenic Fasting Seizure Miracle Diet

Jesus Heals the Child

Matthew 17:18: And Jesus rebuked the devil; and he departed out of him: and the child was cured from that very hour.

Mark 9:20: And they brought him unto him: and when he saw him, straightway the spirit tare him; and he fell on the ground, and wallowed foaming.

Jesus' secret Weapon

Matthew 17:21: Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting

Mark 9:29: And he said unto them, This kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting.

He did what his disciples could not, and his key ingredient was according to him fasting.

Was it really a Demon

I think today most people recognize that this child was likely suffering from epilepsy.

Epilepsy is a common chronic neurological disorder which affects the nervous system. It is characterized by recurrent unprovoked seizures. These seizures are transient signs and/or symptoms due to abnormal, excessive or synchronous neuronal activity in the brain. A sudden, excessive discharge of nervous-system electrical activity that usually causes a change in behavior.

Hippocrates, the Greek physician, wrote the first book on epilepsy around 400 BC, titled “On the Sacred Disease”, (Devinsky ) in which he states his position against the myths often related to epilepsy. For centuries people believed that it was a curse of the gods, and that people with epilepsy held divine powers. In the medieval era, epilepsy was believed to be a sign of witchery, and this belief caused the death of more than 200,000 women.

We know today that epileptics are not possessed by an evil spirit, but what Did Jesus mean by fasting

The Missing Years

The years between 12 and 30 have often provoked great debate. Some seem to not want to know, but we cannot presume he sat in a box those years.

While the evidence that Jesus existed is quite scant, some of it suggests the possibility of travel to asia, most likely India and Tibet. It could quite possibly explain his teachings that seem in such contrast to the Old testament.

How did Asias

What I am concerned with today is the traditional ancient ways of treating epilepsy that existed in Asia before Jesus was even born...with fasting (they didn't use prayer). Jesus most likely learned of the technique on his travels.

Now for the modern western medical science behind why fasting works:

Before drug treatments for epilepsy were invented, scientists noticed that fasting tends to reduce seizure frequency. Subsequent investigation pinned down a metabolic state called ketosis as the causative factor. Ketosis occurs during fasting and also while consuming a diet high in fat and very low in carbohydrates (the ketogenic diet).

When effective anticonvulsant drugs were developed the ketogenic diet fell into disfavor, but in recent years medical interest has returned. Today, the diet is seeing increased use in the treatment of people who do not respond fully to standard medications. Most studies have involved children because they tend to be more agreeable than adults to the diet.

Evidence suggests that the ketogenic diet may almost completely stop seizures in about half of all children with epilepsy and reduce seizure frequency less dramatically in another third.

The ancient way of causing ketosis was with fasting, only allowing epileptics to eat every other day. The modern way would be with a high fat/low carb diet.

So is it a miracle that Jesus could stop a boy from having seizures by making the child fast
